A Gothic Horror take on the Great War.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">Forbidden Psalm: The Last War was released a while ago and it really triggered something I was experimenting with a decade or so ago when I made the command for Freikorps Rorschach and the Deutsche Archeologische Institut.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">My idea was post-war revolution turmoil, trench wars in the collapsed Austro Hungarian empire, dimensional shamblers, ghouls, Ucrainian cannibals, occultists...</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">I understand the Last War is different. Like the film Deathwatch in overdrive. Eternal war in an infinite labyrinth of thousands of miles of nightmarish trenches. Gothic, grimdark setting with small bands of insane and mutated trench war veterans fighting each other and facing supernatural apparitions. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">I dug up this old conversion of an old Blood Bowl Starplayer with a Renegade Miniatures german head and gun. The Renegade germans were sculpted by Kevin Adams who of course did the original Blood Bowl and Warhammer orcs.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLv_itGMajoAHnPMefX7xcQ_MBORYrgOcz_FvYhwUWNCvP5pddIrVtTYx5dzwugmomb7PStoFKqpmyFlKa00evErbgSWhdYa8Pnd8qb4xDwR2VMzNzi7jmv-O1GsId0fw-G5LhXydtTRkUEnChmq4wC26aSR7i9whbAQO_U_U2gXakkHECr1pzq2MntTQ/s1080/IMG_20240115_064654_799.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I initially painted them as <a href="http://area-23.blogspot.com/2016/04/navigator-and-company.html"><b>Starwars rebel pilots</b></a> but I got bored with that. I decided to do the armour in black, to make them appear more menacing and generic.</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX5GhLliYwR9J9Krx6U8mJRgODHGL4hQ77NLm6cRJxh7b95hFuuBRFgLsxNVdvdtGuVE3SIykV8rv6FkRCwT5qJaYtt9ENDTecxY5bT5S9ZxLjOb_YNHNkWmIu58ijtSoRXg1OBN_SggkW1Pv3VsxREYGmF2aipAuo0XH6I7jXISN4ChxM24CPTK9-/s2048/ARMY.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1187" data-original-width="2048" height="231" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX5GhLliYwR9J9Krx6U8mJRgODHGL4hQ77NLm6cRJxh7b95hFuuBRFgLsxNVdvdtGuVE3SIykV8rv6FkRCwT5qJaYtt9ENDTecxY5bT5S9ZxLjOb_YNHNkWmIu58ijtSoRXg1OBN_SggkW1Pv3VsxREYGmF2aipAuo0XH6I7jXISN4ChxM24CPTK9-/w400-h231/ARMY.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><span style="font-family: courier;">The main reason to paint them like this is because I wanted an allied squad of renegade army men for my Night Lords. <br />As with the marines I don't want them over the top chaotic with mutations but more first stage heretics instead. Half of the group I did years ago, when Frostgrave came out. These are nine warriors in 11th century armour. Adding a leader it will be a perfect unit for Oathmark. Possibly chaos armour, grown into the bodies of these damned knights.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">The idea is that in a setting with a 5th century dark age technological level, elves and dwarves have better armour. Resembling Norman armour more or less. At which point Chaos Warriors in magical chaos armour may have their entire body covered in chainmail.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: courier;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjALFaSQ0VWGnQIqVpMIpCnE4D7ct8MR9Hui55BIOv0WHgUFohtnkICFhS9vUiqePl1_3b1ZD_sBNs6vzwgmZEITN_hwumig0FsNeSQsq2njwJQcKlERYFfTJeQjvgQAGcuv2lXROCaQ-k/s2552/IMG_20200817_163058.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1232" data-original-width="2552" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjALFaSQ0VWGnQIqVpMIpCnE4D7ct8MR9Hui55BIOv0WHgUFohtnkICFhS9vUiqePl1_3b1ZD_sBNs6vzwgmZEITN_hwumig0FsNeSQsq2njwJQcKlERYFfTJeQjvgQAGcuv2lXROCaQ-k/s320/IMG_20200817_163058.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: courier;"><br /> With a new Oathmark supplement released covering the Undead I dug up some old stuff and painted some new things.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">And old Grenadier zombie barbarian makes a great Revenant King</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisythOfRgU9cnH93O2cslMySLJ82BTW9Qs4d7GBUoN5YsBHVFPIdBZV7nMybs3YUT4rUtyemhnupbvIKuG5aEIR1dO8cUEappG1QxTW1lAcVpJ92pjmVBjcJz7jk-wA8Y2hmfAqdp0FNM/s1890/IMG_20201114_094847.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1890" data-original-width="1596" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisythOfRgU9cnH93O2cslMySLJ82BTW9Qs4d7GBUoN5YsBHVFPIdBZV7nMybs3YUT4rUtyemhnupbvIKuG5aEIR1dO8cUEappG1QxTW1lAcVpJ92pjmVBjcJz7jk-wA8Y2hmfAqdp0FNM/s320/IMG_20201114_094847.jpg" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: courier;">But there's also old Slough Feg, an old Fantasy Forge miniature. All Citadel contrast paints as they are test models. I absolutely love the concept of ghouls. Insane, degenerate inbred cannibals. The concept of degenerate men seems to have been a trend in the early 20th century.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">Lovecrafts ghouls, Edgar Rice Burroughs' apemen of Opar, Tolkien's orcs, Robert E. Howard's </span><span style="font-family: courier;">Bran Mok Morn Picts, Morlocks... In the end it seems they're all tapping from the same concept or metaphore implying moral degeneration leads to physical degeneration. Or uglyness and physical impurity is a sign of moral decline.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">Something like that. In any case there aren't any ghoul miniatures that I really like. Believe me I've searched everywhere. So in the end I decided to settle with naked human fanatics. I'm a rather childish guy and the idea of hordes of naked men makes me laugh. These are test figures. For a full unit I will use Foundry naked Spartan hoplites, tribal africans and ancient germans. I tried to paint these as sickly and disgusting as possible.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: courier;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvmgGQIN2joWk7vqKsvRHhRpJwk_8V-vMD3WlpHQhzKhBcT9A6byv7HZyv8rnHYWlZPkC2XHp9ZVGZXMuVMINQY6TExuFv_d9SyZcxrILDYTMRfKuaYaIMhEYOW0-ImWSDL-7r_JZ79MM/s2048/IMG_20201114_094805.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1090" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvmgGQIN2joWk7vqKsvRHhRpJwk_8V-vMD3WlpHQhzKhBcT9A6byv7HZyv8rnHYWlZPkC2XHp9ZVGZXMuVMINQY6TExuFv_d9SyZcxrILDYTMRfKuaYaIMhEYOW0-ImWSDL-7r_JZ79MM/s320/IMG_20201114_094805.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: courier;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTJCzIred2pB-MJA61MohyphenhyphenNw4e9Hfushey24fmI6ExoTTVDKzmwqnFHxv23gYaCRNNVSzKFi7XeJS1TNLZI4ibDyxJgbHimLSf82lbkuCVW3UoT5NFOLuN5Zg8H7pGMQvFhHwHTLnTw7A/s2048/IMG_20201114_150446.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1401" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTJCzIred2pB-MJA61MohyphenhyphenNw4e9Hfushey24fmI6ExoTTVDKzmwqnFHxv23gYaCRNNVSzKFi7XeJS1TNLZI4ibDyxJgbHimLSf82lbkuCVW3UoT5NFOLuN5Zg8H7pGMQvFhHwHTLnTw7A/s320/IMG_20201114_150446.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDCYII-vRsxZzBKKpYaLa3qUg5Mdx4jTIeagj6VVE6XuxG3ReF7b5BSpqQjPx-hJA4FzA32qlUK1O58SVia8QAAx54EbnTTn-pBgcAzJD8b99aiu17wtPc4oUSzIVAJ8GrRKZSPKXx-9s/s2048/IMG_20201114_150511.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1243" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDCYII-vRsxZzBKKpYaLa3qUg5Mdx4jTIeagj6VVE6XuxG3ReF7b5BSpqQjPx-hJA4FzA32qlUK1O58SVia8QAAx54EbnTTn-pBgcAzJD8b99aiu17wtPc4oUSzIVAJ8GrRKZSPKXx-9s/s320/IMG_20201114_150511.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKOmJDYu29AS2522hhp7kn9_NrX_6A8ecTyvTfwtNfWUUeflVb7SSgKRP6DUeSi8p03aMF4hF5_NbQHYxtUomaQd-EoEe3w06JTbCcm-PKrexqxeUS8J-o23QD9WKYMhzfcfgtliY4AY4/s2048/IMG_20201114_150535.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1391" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKOmJDYu29AS2522hhp7kn9_NrX_6A8ecTyvTfwtNfWUUeflVb7SSgKRP6DUeSi8p03aMF4hF5_NbQHYxtUomaQd-EoEe3w06JTbCcm-PKrexqxeUS8J-o23QD9WKYMhzfcfgtliY4AY4/s320/IMG_20201114_150535.jpg" width="320" /></a></div></span>area23http://www.blogger.com/profile/00824859085618747031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-818613802068996443.post-83700482811017186652020-03-29T14:45:00.007-05:002020-11-10T15:08:31.995-05:00Wights and Wraiths<p><span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I rebased these Undead for Oathmark on 25mm square bases (Renedra bases that come in the plastic goblin and elf box sets).</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">These orcs are 20mm. figures originally by Rebel Minis. I bought them years ago when the dollar was low and intercontinental postage from the US was still affordable.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I really like the old MERP vibe, straight from the Angus McBride paintings.</span><br />

Coronavirus lockdown. Curfew. Were not supposed to go outside if not for a good reason. Most shops are closed apart from those that provide basic needs.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">So what better to do than paint some old Nick Lund orcs and goblins I've been keeping in boxes for like thirty years?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">A Gundabad Orc banner bearer. Black undercoat, a second white 'zenithal' spray and GW contrast paint.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">A Gundabad goblin king or chieftain with bodyguard. Interesting how Grenadier orcs differed from goblins in appearance but not necessarily in size.</span><br />
